Hirakud Dam

Hirakud Dam was erected across the Mahanadi River in the year 1957. Built at a distance of 15 km from Sambalpur in Odisha, this is one of the longest dams in the world that houses the lake Hirakud Reservoir. This largest man-made dam is a famous sight of attraction among the visitors and thus each traveler makes sure to pay a call to this dam. The world's longest man-made dam Hirakud Dam is about 16 mile (26 km) in length. It's another excellence is that this project is one of the first major multipurpose river valley project began after the independence of India.

Located in close proximity is the Debrigarh wildlife sanctuary that is home to a rich and varied variety of Flora, Fauna, Reptiles and Avi-Fauna. A famous wintering ground for numerous birds from far flung areas, this place is the love of every wildlife lover. The rarest species found here are Common Pochard, Red-crested Pochard, Great Crested Grebe and others.
