The main places of tourist attraction in Orissa (Odisha) includes:
Puri :- Puri in Orissa has the pious Jagannath Temple, the unindented beach and it also hosts the Puri beach festival during Winters to commemorate the art and culture of the state. It is also known for the sand art and the artistic carvings over the shells and conches.
Konarak:- Konarak the famous Sun temple. This magnificent shrine dedicated to the glory of Sun god once, is now inspite of being in its ruins today depicts the architectural and artistic vision of Orissa during the medieval and ancient centuries of history. This magnificent temple has the erotic sculptors of Kamasutra beautifully carved on its walls. It hosts the Konarak Dance festival to commemorate the glorious journey of Indian dance and music.
Bhubaneshwar:- The state capital has the magnificent temple like Lingaraj, Mukteshwar, Parshurameshwar and Niali Madhava. The Bindu Sarovar near the Lingaraj temple is believed to have a drop of every holy river in it.
Cuttack:- This oldest city of Orissa is known for its silver filigree work, the historic Brabati fort around which the city revolves today and the religious shrines Dubhleshwar and Chandi Temple, Dattan Sahib Gurudwara and the ‘Qadam-e- Rasool mosque.
Ansupa Lake:- Ansupa Lake at distance of 70 kms from Cuttack is a picturesque lake amidst the groves of Mango and Bamboo attracts many migratory birds in winters.
Aryapalli Beach:- Away from the humdrum of city, these serene beach at distance of 8 kms from the district head quarters of Ganjam is ideal for those seeking tranquility.
Astaranga:- At distance of 90 kms from Puri and 10 kms from Kakatpur, this marvelous sites produces a breathtaking view of the sunrise and sunset over the horizon which gets painted with the shades of eight different colors. It’s the centre for salt production and fishing in Orissa.
Balesore Beach:-15 kms form Puri, this beach is calm and has shallow waters. Shaivite Temple near the beach is the prime attraction here.
Behrampur:- It has been crowned as the silk city of Orissa, famous worldwide for its silk, this small city is also known for its temples and cultural legacy.
Chandipur Beach:- This is an unique beach in Balesore district of Orissa where the water recedes between 1 - 4 km during the ebb and comes back during the days of high tides. It is a land of great bio diversity and is the home for the rare horse shoe crabs.
Dhaulli Giri:- This is the site of the Kalinga war, invaded by King Ashoka to annex Orissa, the then Kalinga. Ashoka’s rock edicts are reflection of the change of Ashoka’s heart after the gruesome war.
Hirakud Dam:- 15 kms from Sambalpur houses the largest Dam of the world, the Majestic Hirakud Dam built on the river Mahanadi.
Udaygiri and Khandgiri:- These caves on Kumara Parvat were the dwelling of Jaina monks built during the reign of King Kharavela.
Nandankanan, Simlipal, Chilka and Bhitarkanika:- These are the major wildlife sanctuaries in Orissa. Nandankanan is famous for its rarest white tiger population, Simlipal is known for being the natural habitat for the Royal Bengal Tiger and wild Asiatic elephants, Chilka attract millions of resident and migratory birds, while Bhitarkanika supports the mangrove ecosystem. The salt water crocodile conservation campaign brings Bhitarkanika to the world map while the nearby beach of Gahirmatha is known for the nesting grounds of the Olive Ridley turtles.
